Stage West’s annual Texas Playwriting Competition is now the Southwest Playwriting Competition, open to playwrights with a connection to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico, in addition to Texas. The winning play(s) chosen through this competition will be workshopped and presented as a staged reading by professional actors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. A $500 prize will be awarded to the winning playwright, and a future, full production of the play is also possible.
The application postmark deadline is April 15, 2012. Decisions will be made and writers notified by mid-summer 2011. Applicants must have lived in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas or New Mexico for at least two years, though current residency is not required. If the applicant does not currently live in one of these five states, a short statement indicating the playwright’s ties to this region must be included. There is an entry fee of $10, and the play must have no prior professional productions as of time of entry. Previous university productions, workshops and public readings at professional theaters are all acceptable.
Full rules, plus a submission form, are available on the website at www.stagewest.org/sixth-annual-texas-playwriting-competition.
