Fifteen students and adults traveled to Fort Worth Saturday night to see a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Rose Marine Theater. “The Shakespeare-lost-in-Vera-Cruz production by Artes de la Rosa, featured some of the funniest moments for these theater kids, who are accustomed to seeing funny, “reported Charlie Bowles, President of CATS. The kids overcame their language challenges, both with Spanish and Shakespearean, to get caught up in Shakespeare’s compelling tale of young lovers crossed up by mistaken attempts by the gods, in this case Aztec gods, to get them together. “This trip offered our kids a chance to explore the great theater available in the metroplex,” explained Bowles, “while giving them a view of how diverse cultures use theater to express their artistic visions.” He added, “It showed them a unique and fresh way to produce the plays of Shakespeare and taught them that they don’t have to know the language to enjoy artistic expression.”
“We plan to offer more excursions into area theaters throughout the school year,” adds Kim Howard, Director of Education, “We want our kids to see how other productions are shown and learn what a great resource this area’s theater is for them.”
After the show, kids reported that they loved Puck, played by Ronald Fernandez, and Snug, as the lion, played by Alex MacKenzie, who was having his 14th birthday that night. But the high point of the show was a very funny tale of tragic love by the harbor folk, especially Pyramus, played by Rob Bozquez, and Thisbe, played by Angel Bueno, with a double-dying scene to die for. “Our theater kids laughed their heads off at this tale,” Kim reported. Of course, CATS kids always love seeing alumni from CATS productions.
Thanks to Cathy Hernandez, Executive Director, and Yvonne Duque, Artistic Director, for a fine evening of entertainment. And a chance to explore the world of theater. See this show on its last weekend. It will light you up.
